Welcoming “YES” Students: A Journey into Turkish Culture and Norms

On June 27th, 2023, the Yunus Emre Institute USA (YEE) welcomed seven high school students participating in the U.S. Department of State's Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad program. These students were chosen with the aim of promoting mutual understanding between the United States and Turkiye. To ensure their smooth transition and adjustment during one-year study in Turkiye, the YEE organized a sharing session focusing on Turkish culture and norms.

Gokhan Coskun, the executive director, led the session by highlighting the historical significance of Turkiye as a bridge between ancient civilizations, emphasizing its role beyond being a mere country. Additionally, he underscored the importance of exchange programs in fostering connections and understanding among people.

The sharing session focused on key aspects of Turkish norms, including food, clothing, housing, and transportation, offering an overview of special customs. The students actively engaged, voicing their thoughts, asking questions, and expressing their expectations for life in Turkiye.

As these students prepare to embark on their immersive adventure in Turkiye, they are poised to not only gain academic knowledge but also develop a profound appreciation for Turkish traditions. The Yunus Emre Institute USA serves as a supporting force, ensuring that these young ambassadors forge lasting connections and make a meaningful impact on the path to cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
